All data in EcoPort are contributed by volunteer effort. Each contributor understands the incentive that it pays them to share their expertise freely because this gives them access tot he sum of all similar, shared contributions. For this to work, and also to reflect the fact that the ownership of the knowledge required to create EcoPort resides with the individuals who agree to share what they know, no aspect of EcoPort is subject to copyright or any other instrument of intellectual property management that prevents its data from being in the public domain.

Rather than focus on ownership, EcoPort is concerned with recognition and acknowledgement. Thus, the generosity of individual experts willing to participate and nurture EcoPort's philosophy of "winning by sharing", reflected as data records under their Editorial control, is shown in the display, on each record or component of a record, through the display of the Editors name, photogra[ph and institutional affiliation in the format of an Editor & Sponsor's Banner.
